Kaloko-Honokohau National Historical Park
Traverse the barren lava fields of Kaloko-Honokohau National Historical Park to discover how ancient Hawaiians lived off the land. The park features a massive, partially-submerged fishpond with ancient carvings still visible through the clear water. Seaside residents would trade and barter with locals living on the mountainside, exchanging trapped fish and sea salt for produce like breadfruit and yams. Kaloko-Honokohau is located in Kailua-Kona on the Big Island’s west side, just south of Kona International airport.
Kaloko-Honokohau

Puuhonua O Honaunau National Historical Park
Just 40 kilometers south of Kaloko-Honokohau is a site sacred to ancient Hawaiians that is still honored and revered today. Once a place of refuge for those seeking protection or absolution after breaking laws, the park now includes a charming hut guarded by kii, carved wooden statues. It’s also the location of the original seat of the Kona chiefdom, and a 300-meter long “Great Wall” protects the Royal Grounds. The quiet beachside location continues to provide visitors with a tranquil escape from the stress of modern life.
Puuhonua O Honaunau

Petroglyphs
Some of the most mysterious remnants of bygone times, petroglyphs are ancient carvings and markings made by ancient Hawaiians from long ago, and can be found in many places around the Big Island. Most are etched onto black lava rock, featuring human-like drawings and other figures. The meaning of this artwork is debated, but the petroglyphs could represent historical events, location markers or even prayers. Three petroglyph sites are open to the public: Puako Petroglyph Archeological Preserve and Kings’ Trail, both along the Kohala Coast, as well as Pu‘u Loa Petroglyph trail at Hawai‘i Volcanoes National Park.
Petroglyphs
Puukohola Heiau Temple
The incredible Puukohola Heiau Temple is located just north of Waikoloa Village, and welcomes visitors with an enormous stone wall standing over 6 meters high. Visit to learn how the temple and its expansive stone walls were built and discover the fascinating historical events that took place there, then explore the area’s other points of interests like an underwater temple for the shark gods and a British sailor’s homestead.
Puukohola Heiau
